About the institution |
The Navyug Vidyabhavan Trust came into existence in the year
1965 as a brain child of Late Prin. Dr. D. G. Vashi, an eminent educationist and
visionary.
In those days the institutes
of higher education in various disciplines managed by the Sarvajanik Education society
were pocketed on the eastern banks of the river Tapti and the areas on the opposite
side of the river were not fully developed.
The students of this area and those residing in the nearby villages found it difficult
to commute everyday to reach their respective colleges rather difficult as the means
of transport were scant. Late Prin. Dr. D. G. Vashi, then a professor of Statistics
at Bilimora College, foresaw the need of an institute of higher education in this
area. He was neither rich nor influential, politically or otherwise. However, he
succeeded in materializing his concept into reality and decided to start Arts and
Science College on Rander Road area.
As his idea and cause both were noble, like minded people joined hands with him
and Navyug Arts and Science College came into existence in the year 1966 with an
humble strength of 300 students.
The Navyug Vidyabhavan Trust was registered under Bombay Public Trust Act 1950 as
a Public Education Trust on 21-2-1965. Two separate buildings for arts and science
faculties were built on approximately 20000sq. ft. land area. As South Gujarat University
(now Veer Narmad South Gujarat University) was non-existent at that time, the college
was affiliated to the Gujarat University. Even though the Trust did not have adequate
funds for the smooth running of the college, the Local Inquiry Committee of Late
Shri Chimanbhai Patel and Dr. Y. G. Naik recommended for affiliation to the Gujarat
University for the noble cause of the Trust.
The strength of students increased rapidly and the Trustees foresaw the need to
open commerce faculty on the constant demand of the people of this area. After four
years of its inception, Science College was bifurcated from Arts and became an independent
unit. Now the colleges were named Navyug Science College and Navyug Arts and Commerce
College respectively. Prof. J. L. Desai became the first Principal of Navyug Arts
and Commerce College, who laid down the academic foundation of the institute. As
strength in the commerce faculty increased in leaps and bounds, it was necessary
to separate arts and commerce faculties. In the year 1973 Navyug Commerce College
was established as a separate unit. Prin. J. L. Desai was now the head of the institution.
After thirty five years of its bifurcation from Arts College, the strength of students
has now reached to 1858.
Navyug Commerce College is fully developed educational institution, ranked the second
best among the commerce colleges of the city. Prin. Desai’s vision, commitment and
discipline had been unique and exemplary. The credit of some of the best traditions
of this college goes in no small measure to Prin. Desai. The college was privileged
by his rich knowledge and vast experience. He was a syndicate member for two terms-
between 1979 and 1982, between 1982 and 1985 and contributed to the progress of
the University. He is a poet by heart. His contribution to Gujarati poetry has been
noteworthy. Two collections of his poems are published. Several of his poems have
been published in the leading Gujarati literary magazines ‘Kumar’ and ‘Kavilok’.
Due to financial crisis, the whole institution was handed over to eminent industrialist
and business man Shri C.K.Pithawala in 1982. Since then the colleges of this campus
are managed by Shri C.K.Pithawala and his associate trustees. Late Prin. Mr S.A.Desai
succeeded Prin. Mr. J.L.Desai. He took charge of the college when the institution
had earned good name and fame. During his tenure he widened the base of higher education
and the strength of the college. Blessed with administrative skills, he played a
very significant role in the field of higher education in South Gujarat. Navyug
Commerce College is headed by Prin. Mr. J. M. Naik since 1997. He had borne the
responsibilities of the Dean of commerce faculty from 2003 to 2006. During his tenure
syllabi of all disciplines were upgraded and brought to execution. He has been elected
as a syndicate member from 2006 onwards. He manages the teaching and administrative
staff with his high ability and efficiency. He is a good leader and an able administrator.
